| Depending on which way you look at it, at just 3.1 metres wide but 25 metres long, this is a very slender site. On one side opening onto the commercial hub of Brown’s Bay and the other end onto a beachfront lane, it took some imagination to see the commercial potential for this defunct right of way.
Removing the dilapidated existing building meant the new building designed by FGA could extend at the beach end. The resulting simple structure is now a café and gelateria opening to the beach side. |
Accessed from the street side, on the upper level is a barber shop and hair salon with views across an outdoor patio to the sea.
Intentionally using an industrial look visually maximises the space and provides greater design flexibility. Exposed beams add height, and the interior floors are in situ concrete with exposed duction for efficient airflow. The perfect spot for beachside dining. |
