Alteration
The existing yacht club building had been on location for many years, exposed to prevailing south westerly winds and crashing waves. The environment could hardly have been harsher, severely affecting the durability of all aspects of the clubrooms. Adding complexity was the remoteness of the location and associated security issues.

The redevelopment was funded by a dedicated group of locals who saw the facility as an important community meeting place and were keen to ensure it not be demolished. Birkenhead Yacht Club’s brief was to reconfigure the building to redress these issues of durability and security, creating a more flexible space for use by community groups with varying needs.

The new clubrooms have a new entry, protected from the weather, a disabled access changing room, and extensive storage for learn to sail, rescue boats and other small vessels. The new kitchen, deck and gathering space offer the flexibility the club required, successfully enabling multiple groups from the boating and wider community to meet simultaneously. And of course the materials used are selected with durability in the face of extreme conditions front of mind.
